I love food -- one of my favourite things to do is checking out new places to eat and try out something new. Over the course of many years, I've been taking shots of food that looks... mmm.... good enuff to eat? I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with the food on display here.

with all the traveling i've been doing these past few years, i thought it'd be interesting to start a fotopage on the food served on board all these flights. i've just started, so there's not going to be a lot of stuff to see -- hopefully, this page will grow to be something more substantial!

most people would agree if i said that airplane food does not taste that good. well, here's a few reasons why:
1. the quality of in-flight meals have dropped over the years because of cost-cutting (visit http://airlinemeals.net to see more than 18,000 pictures of airline meals, spanning more than half a century).
2. pressurized aircraft, low humidity, dehydration, cabin pressure -- we lose about 20 percent of our taste buds.

when i was younger, i had the mindset that since flight tickets are expensive, the food had to be good too, regardless of how it really tasted. since then, i've made it a habit to eat to the last speck of habuk every inflight meals... Fri 24-Nov-2006 03:06

unbeknownst to many, there is a red IKEA soft toy named schumacher (or better known as the red guy) who tags along on my trips -- a very good travel companion -- no need to pay for tickets, lodging or even food!

Stuck in Kathmandu, Nepal

our new hotel - 26 Dec
i decided to just take a shower instead - 26 Dec
we were still stuck the next day - 27 Dec

after coming back from thamel, we went back to the soaltee hotel to get ready to fly back, but it was then we were informed that our air nepal flight was cancelled and that we were stranded for at least another day. we were bounded off to the hotel himalaya in patan for the duration of our extended stay.

we were stranded there for an additional three days!!! and after much running around and stressful arguing, we managed to get home.

Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal

from patan, we headed to thamel, located in the middle of kathmandu. you can find hundreds of shops selling all sorts of touristy stuff, trekking gear and restaurants. you can even find genuine khukuris or gurkha knives -- the ones issued to the nepali army and the gurkha army/police regiments in the UK, singapore and brunei -- the real deal called 'service number 1'.

after spending rupees and hours there, we headed to an impressive nepali food restaurant that features cultural dances and every one of us got a tika on our forehead from the hostess.

the next day, we went to thamel again for some more shopping,

Patan, Kathmandu, Nepal

from bhaktapur, we headed off for lunch and then to patan, a section of kathmandu located in the south end. patan also has a durbar square and by this time, we were bored looking at the same old things -- newari temples, garudas, statues, etc -- so we didn't spend that much time there. to pass the time, i watched kids playing this game where they 'timbang' a ball of rubber band with their feet. seems to be a popular game with kids everywhere in nepal and girls are not excluded.

coming down from nagarkot, we went to bhaktapur, an ancient city close to kathmandu. bhaktapur also has a durbar square and there you can find the most important piece of art in kathmandu valley, the golden gate. there's a second square called taumadhi tole, which has the nyatapola temple, the highest temple in kathmandu valley.

on saturday, we made an early move for nagarkot -- a grueling 9-hour bus journey away from pokhara. nagarkot is located around 2000 m above sea level and on a really good day, you can see mount everest way way in the distance. the air was so thin that i semput when i ran up the slopes and stairs!

early thursday morning, we left on the bus along the prithvi highway to reach the lakeside touristy town on pokhara. this place is gorgeous. along the north east horizon of the hotel, we could see the annapurna range, and the lake called phewa tal provided a cun giler reflection of the mountains, especially the macchapuchhare. our resort... memang the best that pokhara can offer lah...

farouk, riznal, hil and i went to nepal on a tour package. i was really excited about this trip because nepal sounds so 'out there' and what with the royal massacre story la, the maoist rebels la, the legend of the gurkha army and of course, the great himalayan range, i was ready for some adventure (okaylah... pegi bandar-bandar and by package, apa yang nak adventure sangat pun, kan? hehehe).

i've written down quite an exhaustive account of our trip there in my other blog. http://-silvertongue-.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_-silvertongue-_archive.html -- start from the bottom because i had to break it down into three posts and the recent ones are on top.

n'ways, i prepared myself quite well for this trip by hanging out with the nepali guards kat kilang nih, panic myself by reading news about nepal and memorising the contents of my nepal lonely planet book from cover-to-cover (okaylah... that's a fib... )
